When your at horse show you need to make your horse look GOOD.
That means taking the time to bathe him, scrub his little hooves and yes to all you hunters…braiding.
Now. There are some standards when it comes to braiding.
For example :

This is not ok by any means. It is messy and ugly.
Another not ok braiding job:

This looks very pretty and neat and probably took a lot of time. But unless your an Andalusian or circus horse best just to leave it be.
This is what your aiming for – Good ol yarn and hardwork :

And please don’t forget your forelock! So many people will show up with lovely braids and their forelock hanging out.

As for tails, I have two different opinions on them. I think they look great braided up properly with a wrap around or pin-wheel but if your horse has a really skinny bony bum, I would avoid it. Braiding tails are meant to draw the eye to the horse’s hind end movement. If your horse doesn’t have it.. Why draw the eye?

I think clipping is another important thing to do. It makes your horse go from backyard looking to show quality. Muzzle and jaw are essential but I won’t give my opinion on the ears because I know some people like the hair.

Some other essentials you must have that were originally found in the AQHA world but MUST come here are :

Pepi Spray! Similar to show sheen but not as oily and more shine. It also goes on as an aerosol spray so more evenly.

Glow Gel <3 My goodness do I love this stuff. It will make your tired dusty looking gelding into a stud in 10 seconds. It shines the face around the eyes and muzzles to give a clean fresh look.

Last but not least Baking Soda. For those stupid stubborn socks that just will not go white even after using white and bright.
So everyone, lets clean up our horses and go showing
